Is Invisalign® Right for You?

If you’re looking to straighten your smile, you have likely considered Invisalign. Invisalign treatment uses a series of clear, custom aligners to gently move teeth to preferred positions over several months.

Invisalign offers significant benefits to adults and older teens wishing to have straighter teeth. For starters, Invisalign aligners are removable, allowing the patient to take them off when eating and brushing their teeth. This degree of convenience and flexibility enables patients to proceed with orthodontic treatment without disrupting their everyday lives.

What’s more, Invisalign treatment doesn’t demand multiple trips to the dentist for adjustments, as is the case with metal braces. In addition, Invisalign aligners are comfortable and don’t scrape against your gums and lips.

Despite its outstanding advantages, the truth is that Invisalign treatment isn’t suitable for everyone. Therefore, before recommending Invisalign treatment, your dentist considers various critical aspects, including your ability to comply with treatment guidelines.

You may be a fitting candidate for Invisalign treatment if:

  • You have a treatable bite problem. Invisalign treats numerous forms of malocclusion, including crowding, gap teeth, overbite, crossbite, open bite and underbite. However, Invisalign is limited to the treatment of mild to moderate bite issues. For more severe cases of malocclusion, your dentist will recommend traditional braces.
  • You’re old enough. Invisalign treatment is best suited for older teens and adults as these ages have a better chance of complying with treatment. Older teens are also likely to have undergone complete jaw development.
  • You can comply with treatment instructions. For Invisalign treatment to be successful, you must keep your aligners on for at least 22 hours each day. Failure to do this can compromise the treatment outcome. If you’re unable or unwilling to keep your aligners on for this amount of time, you may not be a fitting candidate for Invisalign treatment.
  • You’re a non-smoker. Smoking can stain your clear aligners. If you’re a heavy smoker and are interested in getting Invisalign treatment, you might want to start by quitting the cigarette. Otherwise, you may not enjoy the clear aligners for long as they’ll become stained in no time.
